A Hanging Analysis
ââ¬Å"A Hangingâ⬠by George Orwell is a powerful short story on capital punishment. A Hindu man from Burma was taken out of his cell and walked down to be hung. The story never explains why the man was ever arrested and sentenced to death. At the beginning, the narrator doesnââ¬â¢t seem to care about taking a man down to his death because heââ¬â¢s just doing his job. But when the prisoner goes around a puddle of water, everything changes. At this point, the narrator realizes that this man is no different than any other person out there. The narratorââ¬â¢s conscience starts to take over and begins to grow a connection with this unknown prisoner.à ââ¬Å"it is curious, but till that moment I had never realized what it means to destroy a healthy, conscious man[,]â⬠said the narrator. After the prisoner stepped around the puddle, the narrator noticed that he has no right to take this manââ¬â¢s life. The prisoner, just like any other person, deserves to live a long life. At the beginning, the narrator didnââ¬â¢t see the prisoner as a person, he saw him as just another part of his job. Now, the narrator sees him just as he sees any other regular person. He notices that he can still think like anyone else, heââ¬â¢s body still functions properly, and that heââ¬â¢s breathing the same air as he is. And as the narrator said, this prisoner wasnââ¬â¢t dying, he was as alive as everyone else. What can this man have done not to deserve a second chance? Even though the author never asked the question, one notices that the narrator thought about it. The narratorââ¬â¢s conscience believes that everyone deserves a second chance to life and unfortunately, the prisoner was never given a second chance. At this point, for all one knows, the prisoner could have just been used as an example to the community of what happens to people when they break the law, even though itââ¬â¢s a small crime. Or he could have been the worse criminal in history. No one will ever know. But the fact that no one knows the reason why the Hindu man is sentenced to death, makes the reader feel more connected to the prisoner and makes the reader think the same way as the narrator. At the end, the Hindu man was finally hung. The story starts to build silence and awkwardness among the narrator and his coworkers. Not knowing on how to react towards the hanging of a man, another soldier made a funny comment on the situation and everyone laughed. But it wasnââ¬â¢t a regular laughter, it was a nervous laughter. This shows how everyone, specially the narrator, was looking for ways to turn the hanging around and find a comfort zone to the situation. He didnââ¬â¢t want to feel the guilt of taking a manââ¬â¢s live away. The discomfort caused the narrator to start drinking. The narrator wasnââ¬â¢t the only man drinking there, showing that he wasnââ¬â¢t the only person who grew emotions for the prisoner. The other soldiers also knew that the prisoner deserved a second chance as well.

Rodriguez, son of Mexican immigrants, was born in San Francisco but spoke only Spanish as his language of communication in his childhood. So, when he joined the Catholic school in Sacramento, California, at the age of 6, he had speaking vocabulary of just 50 English words. Because of this limited knowledge of English, he became a confused and reticent boy with low confidence level. So, his autobiography, Hunger of Memory details those tough times in his school and the resultant separation, in a pathetic as well as sympathetic style, language and tone. Throughout the book and specifically in the chapters, Aria, Achievement of Desire, Credo and Complexion, Rodriguezââ¬â¢s insecurities in English, the resultant isolation or separation and the role played by his family and Catholic Church, have lead to a self-absorbed style with a lot of strain flowing. This style brings up a lot of feelings and emotions that got built up in Rodriguezââ¬â¢s mind, in that phase of his life. Due to the separation he firstly suffered in his class, his emotion bordered on the feeling of loss and that got incorporated into the work. Also, this being the bad phase of his life, he distances from it and so uses the style of aloofness in these chapters. Since, Richard is also a victim of cultural clashes; he brings these elements in these parts of the work. GE, Welch and the Trait Theory of Leadership - Essay Example Two theories of leadership can be applied to the style used by Welch and these are the trait theories set and the situational theories of leadership. Gardner (1995) presents us with several ideas which leaders can use to change their leadership styles or how they can balance the styles depending on the situation. The idea of leadership traits can come with several stereotypes or ideas that some people are born leaders, but leadership skills can also be taught to people although the right personality always helps (Welch, 2005).For example, when we consider the third rule given by Welch which states that leaders must give out and infect others with positive energy and optimistic views about situations. That is a key pointer towards the fact that Jack Welch considers the majority of leadership skills to come from the trait theory than any other applicable theory. Undoubtedly, optimism is a personality trait and being able to create optimism or any other emphatic feeling in others requir es a leader to have charisma (DePree, 1989). Charisma is accepted by DePree (1998) to be a rare quality which is attributed to those leaders who create devoted followers. Devoted followers and employees who become your personal friends as well as have complete faith in your vision are simply essential.
